Pick Me Up Tuesday: Animal Assisted Counseling of Indiana
š Pick Me Up Tuesday: Celebrate Moments of Joy This Fourth of July
Pick Me Up Tuesday Fourth of July is your midweek encouragementāa little boost to remind you that even during busy or emotional weeks, thereās space for joy, connection, and care.
As the Fourth of July approaches, many people look forward to fireworks, family, and food. But itās also a time when emotions can feel complexāespecially if youāre stretched thin, navigating transitions, or feeling the pressure to make everything āperfect.ā
This week, weāre inviting you to approach the holiday with something simpler: presence over perfection. You donāt need a flawless celebration. You just need a few moments of real joyāand weāre here to remind you that those count.
At Animal Assisted Counseling of Indiana, we see how small moments of calm, kindness, and connectionāespecially with the help of our therapy dogsācan help our clients feel more grounded and hopeful, no matter the season.Fourth of July
š Thereās No Right Way to Celebrate
Letās be honest: not everyone enjoys loud parties or packed calendars. And guess what? You donāt have to.
The Fourth of July can be whatever you need it to be. Whether youāre lighting sparklers with family, relaxing in the backyard with your dog, or soaking up the quiet, you get to choose how you celebrate.
Here are some joyful, low-pressure ideas:
Watch fireworks from a cozy blanket in the yard
Host a small cookout with close friends or family
Take your dog on a peaceful evening walk
Start a new tradition like journaling gratitude or sharing stories
Pause to notice what youāre thankful for right now
Joy doesnāt have to be loudāit just has to feel real.
š¶ Donāt ForgetāFireworks Can Stress Out Pets, Too
While you’re thinking about your own comfort and celebration style, remember that our dogs have feelings, too. For many petsāespecially dogsāFourth of July festivities can be confusing or even frightening.
Sudden loud noises, fireworks, unfamiliar guests, and changes in routine can leave your furry friends feeling anxious or unsettled. At AACI, we work closely with therapy dogs and understand how important it is to make sure they feel safe and calm.
Here are a few gentle ways to help support your pet this week:
Create a quiet space where your dog can retreat from noise or crowds
Use calming music or white noise to help drown out fireworks
Stay close during peak firework timesāthey feel safer with you nearby
Avoid forced interactionāsome dogs prefer not to be part of the party
Consider an anxiety vest or calming treat, if recommended by your vet
If your dog is used to being part of your grounding routine, this is a great time to return the favor. They help us stay calm all year longāthis is a chance to care for them in return.

š¾ The Comfort of Calm Companionship
For many of us (and especially for kids), the sounds and unpredictability of July 4th can be overwhelming. Thatās where therapy dogs come in.
At AACI, weāve seen how the quiet presence of a dog can help someone feel:
More at ease
Less anxious in social settings
Open to connection and conversation
Emotionally grounded
Whether youāre preparing for a family gathering or processing feelings that come up around holidays, therapy dogs help create an atmosphere of calm and emotional safety.
š Gratitude for the Small Stuff
This Pick Me Up Tuesday, consider using the holiday as a moment to resetānot pressure yourself.
Ask yourself:
Whatās working well right now, even if itās small?
What am I looking forward to today?
Who or what brings me comfort and joy?
You donāt need fireworks to feel a spark. Gratitude has a way of gently shifting your perspectiveāand science shows itās great for your mental health, too.

šæ Itās Okay to Feel Good
Sometimes we hesitate to lean into happiness because we feel guilty for itāespecially if things have been heavy lately. But youāre allowed to laugh. Youāre allowed to rest. Youāre allowed to enjoy your day.
Holidays are a reminder that moments of joy are still possible, even when life feels complicated.

šÆ Pick Me Up Tuesday Task: Celebrate One Joyful Moment
Todayās task: Choose one thing today that brings you joyāand make space for it, no matter how small.
Try:
Writing down 3 things youāre grateful for
Lighting a sparkler with someone you love
Watching your dog chase fireflies
Sipping something cold and sweet in the sunshine
