Teen Therapy in
North West Indiana

The teenage years can bring changes that feel difficult to navigate alone. Anxiety, depression, school stress, relationships, self-esteem, family concerns, and overwhelming emotions can all affect how a teen feels and functions.

At Animal Assisted Counseling of Indiana, we provide a comfortable, supportive space where teens can talk openly, better understand what they are experiencing, and develop healthier ways of coping. Counseling is individualized to each teen, and when appropriate, a therapy dog may be part of the experience—offering another source of comfort and connection.

What Is Teen
Therapy?

Teen therapy provides a supportive space for adolescents to talk about what they are experiencing with a trained mental health professional. For some teens, that may mean working through anxiety, depression, school stress, relationships, family concerns, self-esteem, grief, or other challenges that are affecting everyday life.

Therapy is not about telling teens what to think or how they should feel. Instead, counseling can help them better understand their emotions, recognize patterns, develop healthy coping skills, and find ways to manage difficult situations with greater confidence.

At Animal Assisted Counseling of Indiana, therapy is shaped around each teen’s individual needs and comfort level. When a therapy dog is present, interaction is always optional. Some teens enjoy having the dog nearby as they talk, while others simply appreciate sharing the space with a calm, comforting presence.

How We Support Teens in Therapy

Family Therapy

Family relationships can play an important role in a teen’s emotional well-being. When appropriate, family therapy can provide a supportive space for teens and parents or caregivers to better understand one another, improve communication, and work through concerns together.

Family involvement is individualized based on the teen’s needs, circumstances, and treatment goals. The goal is not to place blame, but to strengthen understanding, communication, and support within the family.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help teens recognize connections between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By becoming more aware of these patterns, teens can begin developing healthier ways of responding to difficult situations.

CBT may be helpful for concerns such as anxiety, depression, negative self-talk, school stress, and overwhelming emotions. Strategies are adapted to the individual teen rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) incorporates practical skills that can help teens better understand and manage strong emotions, cope with stressful situations, communicate more effectively, and navigate relationships.

Elements of DBT may be incorporated into counseling when they are appropriate for a teen’s individual needs and treatment goals. Therapy remains focused on helping each teen develop skills they can use in everyday life.

How Teen Therapy Can Help

Teens come to counseling for many different reasons. Therapy can provide support when anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, behavioral concerns, ADHD, or other challenges begin affecting everyday life. At Animal Assisted Counseling of Indiana, we meet each teen where they are and tailor counseling to their individual needs, experiences, and goals.

How Animal-Assisted Therapy Can Support Teens

Icon A Calm, Supportive Presence

A therapy dog can bring a calm, welcoming presence into the counseling room. For some teens, simply having a dog nearby can make the environment feel more comfortable and less formal. Interaction is always based on the teen’s preferences and comfort level.

Teens experiencing anxiety, stress, or overwhelming emotions may find the presence of a therapy dog comforting. Sitting near, petting, or simply sharing the room with a calm dog can help create an environment where teens feel more at ease as they participate in counseling.

Some teens find it difficult to begin talking about themselves or what they are experiencing. A therapy dog can offer another point of connection in the room without requiring conversation. This can help counseling feel more natural and comfortable, especially as a therapeutic relationship is developing.

Building trust is an important part of counseling. For some teens, having a therapy dog present can make it easier to engage, communicate, and gradually become more comfortable with the therapeutic process. The dog complements—not replaces—the relationship between the teen and therapist.
